Description of the site
Haniya Spring is a beautiful area combining a spring, an ancient pool full of water, an archaeological site and a cultural landscape of traditional agriculture. Reconstructed aqueducts channel the water to an ancient irrigation pool now used for swimming.
Archaeological excavations by the Israel Antiquities Authority uncovered one of the most impressive water systems in Israel, two pools from the Byzantine period and a nymphaeon (fountain) from the Roman period. The water system feeds the pools as it did in bygone days.
The Israel Nature and Parks Authority, which is in charge of the site, has restored its old terraces and planted them with orchard species. The Authority is planning to restore a traditional agricultural terrace.
Haniya Spring is a sacred place and a pilgrimage site for members of the Armenian and the Ethiopian churches. The area around the pool and the nymphaeon is the property of the Armenian Church. Please respect the site.
